Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - Isaiah Armwood's putback dunk with two
seconds remaining lifted the George Washington Colonials to an 81-80 overtime
win over the Dayton Flyers in an Atlantic 10 contest at the Charles E. Smith
Center.
Joe McDonald shot 7-of-11 to pace George Washington (13-16, 7-9 A-10) with 16
points. Dwayne Smith finished with 15 points, Bryan Banes had 13 and Armwood
and Lasan Kromah scored 12 points apiece.
Dyshawn Pierre netted 21 points on 8-of-9 from the floor in the losing effort.
Kevin Dillard tallied 20 points and four assists, Vee Sanford had 18 points
and Josh Benson scored 10 points before fouling out. Dayton (17-13, 7-9) had
its three-game winning streak come to an end.
Dayton led by as many as 11 points midway through the first half but GW
battled back to tie the score at 33-33 heading into halftime. GW registered 10
second chance points in the opening period while holding Dayton to zero.
Dayton regained the lead on a Dillard layup with 12:26 remaining in the second
half and never trailed for the rest of the period. Leading 71-69 with 39
seconds left, Kromah knotted the score with a layup of his own. Both teams
came up empty on their next possessions as regulation ended in a 71-71 draw.
Pierre scored seven points in the extra session, including four straight
points to give the Flyers a 79-75 advantage with just over a minute left to
play. Consecutive steals and fast break baskets for McDonald and Smith tied
the score until Matt Derenbecker made one of two at the line with seven
seconds remaining, giving Dayton its final lead of the game. After Kromah's
shot was off the mark with four seconds left, Armwood was in the right
place at the right time to win it for the Colonials.
With the loss, Dayton falls to 0-2 in overtime games this season.
