Providence, RI (Sports Network) - Miles Cartwright scored eight straight
points for Penn down the stretch, including a pair of free throws with 0.7
seconds remaining, in order to give the Quakers a thrilling 66-64 win over the
Brown Bears in Ivy League action at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Cartwright finished with a game-high 25 points for Penn (9-20, 6-6 Ivy) as the
team posted a second straight win. Patrick Lucas-Perry responded with 15
points off the bench for the visitors as well.
The Bears (12-15, 6-7) were led by Rafael Maia who registered a double-double
with 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while Sean McGonagill tallied 15
points as the team had a three-game win streak snapped. Matt Sullivan and
Stephen Albrecht responded with 13 points apiece, the latter converting 3-of-4
shots behind the 3-point line.
Both teams shot around 42 percent from the floor in the first half, but the
Bears were guilty of a staggering 18 turnovers as they fell behind at the
break by five, 33-28. Cartwright tallied 17 points as he connected on all
three of his 3-point tries in the period.
In the second half the Bears cut down on their mistakes and used a run midway
through the period in order to establish a seven-point lead at 60-53.
Cartwright led Penn back to a 64-64 tie and then was awarded three free throws
after he hoisted up a shot from 40 feet away when Brown attempted to foul him
prior to getting a shot away.
Cartwright knocked down the first two attempts and then missed the third
intentionally in order to keep the Bears from getting off a lucky shot of
their own.
Brown held a 41-25 rebounding advantage and also outscored the visitors at the
charity stripe, 17-8, but was crippled by 26 miscues which the Quakers traded
in for 26 points
