Akron, OH (Sports Network) - Darren Goodson tallied 19 points and eight
rebounds to help lead the Kent State Golden Flashes to an impressive 68-64
road victory over the Akron Zips at James A. Rhodes Arena in the Mid-American
Conference regular-season finale for both teams.
Kris Brewer added 13 points for Kent State (19-12, 9-7 MAC), while Randal Holt
and Chris Evans poured in 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Golden Flashes
are now winners of a season-high five straight games.
For Akron (24-6, 14-2), Zeke Marshall had 14 points, eight rebounds and five
blocks, while Demetrius Treadwell recorded 13 points and 13 rebounds. The
Zips, who have lost two of three on the heels of a 19-game winning streak,
were without point guard Alex Abreu (10.3 ppg, 6.0 apg), who has been
suspended indefinitely.
Akron came out of the gates sluggish, making just 34.4 percent of its field
goal attempts in the first half. Kent State shot 14-of-30 from the floor
(.467) in the opening stanza as it took a comfortable 40-25 lead into the
break.
The Zips gained ground after intermission, even bringing their deficit to just
three with 28 seconds left following a Reggie McAdams 3-pointer, but the
Golden Flashes sealed their fate by shooting 4-of-4 from the free-throw stripe
to close out the game.
Kent State outscored Akron at the foul line, 20-8.
