Asheville, NC (Sports Network) - Derrell Armstrong tallied 25 points and eight
rebounds as the 10th-seeded UNC Greensboro Spartans overcame a double-digit
halftime deficit to take down the seventh-seeded Chattanooga Mocs, 87-81,
in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament.
Trevis Simpson added 17 points and five assists for UNCG (9-21), which will
take on second-seeded Elon in the quarterfinal round on Saturday. Nicholas
Paulos chipped in 11 points off the bench for the Spartans, while Kayel Locke
had 10 points.
For Chattanooga (13-19), Z. Mason logged 20 points and eight rebounds, Ronrico
White shot 4-of-8 from 3-point range en route to 19 points and Casey Jones
poured in 11 points.
Chattanooga shot 56 percent from the field in the first half as it took a
43-32 lead into intermission.
UNCG improved from 46.2 percent field goal efficiency in the opening stanza to
58.6 percent after the break as it made its charge. The Spartans ripped off a
27-7 late in the second half to seal their fate.
The Spartans won despite a lackluster showing from the free-throw line
(18-31).
