Evanston, IL (Sports Network) - D.J. Newbill and Jermaine Marshall each
finished with 18 points to lead the Penn State Nittany Lions over the
Northwestern Wildcats, 66-59, in a Big Ten Conference bout at Welsh-Ryan
Sasa Borovnjak added a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for the
Nittany Lions (10-19, 2-15 Big Ten).
For the Wildcats (13-17, 4-13), Alex Marcotullio finished with a game-high 22
points, while Reggie Hearn chipped in with 11 points.
Penn State connected on 47.8 percent from the field in the first half,
including 5-of-10 from beyond the 3-point arc, as it took a 34-30 advantage
into the break. Northwestern made just 36.4 percent of its shots from the
field and 3-of-8 from 3-point range.
After halftime, the Nittany Lions continued to shoot well from the field,
making 50 percent of their field goal tries, including 2-of-7 from 3-point
range. They held the Wildcats to just 33.3 percent shooting and 5-of-15 from
3-point range. After trailing for most of the half, Northwestern rallied to
take a 54-53 lead with just over six minutes to play, but an 8-1 run by the
Nittany Lions State put them back ahead for good, as they grabbed their first
conference road victory of the season.
The Nittany Lions dominated down low, outscoring the Wildcats 28-12 in the
paint and outrebounding them, 38-23.
