Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Nikola Malesevic scored 19 points and
grabbed seven rebounds to lift the Rhode Island Rams to a 67-62 victory over
the Duquesne Dukes in Atlantic 10 Conference action at the A.J. Palumbo
Center.
Xavier Munford added 14 points and six assists for URI (8-16, 3-8 A-10) as it
notched its second win in a row to mark its first streak of wins since
entering conference play.
Derrick Colter submitted a solid all-around effort for the Dukes (8-17, 1-10)
with 20 points, seven assists, five rebounds and two steals. Jerry Jones
chimed in with 11 points and Andre Marhold scored 10 points and rejected five
shots. The loss came just one game after Duquesne upset Temple for its first
win in league play of the 2012-13 campaign.
Munford went 5-of-5 at the free-throw line and dealt out three assists in the
first half to help the Rams take a 33-28 lead into halftime. The Dukes went
into the break trailing by five points after they missed all four of their
shots at the charity stripe in the opening stanza.
Duquesne battled back and held a 57-53 lead with 4:06 left in regulation, but
URI scored five consecutive points to go back in front. After Colter tied it
up by splitting a pair at the free-throw line, Malesevic drained a 3-pointer
to put the visitors in front for good. The Rams managed to hang on for the
victory despite committing 10 turnovers in the final 20 minutes of play.
URI outscored the hosts, 28-16, in the paint and also, 14-6, at the charity
stripe to pick up the road win.
