Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Geron Johnson tallied a game-high 19 points as
the Memphis Tigers defeated the SMU Mustangs, 60-52, in Conference USA play at
Moody Coliseum.
Johnson also added seven rebounds for the Tigers (19-3, 8-0 C-USA). Adonis
Thomas was one board shy of a double-double scoring 14 points, as Memphis
moved on to a 13-game winning streak.
For the Mustangs (12-12, 2-7), Jalen Jones recorded a double-double with 13
points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Nick Russell contributed a team-high 17
points. Ryan Manuel added 10 points and seven rebounds as SMU lost for the
fifth time in its last six games.
Memphis went 4-of-10 beyond the arc, while holding the hosts to a mere 1-of-7
shooting from long-range, en route to a 22-17 advantage at the break.
SMU continued to struggle from long range making 0-of-5 in the second half.
Memphis made 19-of-26 free-throws and 3-of-10 from long range for the eight-
point victory. The Tigers managed to hang on for the decision despite failing
to make a single field goal attempt during the final four minutes of
regulation.
Memphis made 7-of-20 from long range and held SMU to a mere 1-of-12 beyond the
arc on the night. Memphis also outscored SMU in free throws, 25-13. The Tigers
are now the only remaining team in the C-USA without a loss in league play.
