Jonesboro, AR (Sports Network) - Cameron Golden scored 18 points, include a 3-
pointer in the final seconds to send the game into overtime, as the Arkansas
State Red Wolves outlasted the North Texas Mean Green, 75-66, in a Sun Belt
Conference showdown at the Convocation Center.
For the Red Wolves (14-8, 8-5 SBC), Ed Townsel added 15 points, Trey Finn
scored 14, Kendrick Washington chipped in with 10 points and Brandon
Peterson pulled down 14 rebounds, but the latter missed all seven of his field
goal attempts as he finished scoreless.
Jordan Williams led the Mean Green (8-16, 3-10) with 18 points, while Tony
Mitchell scored 14, Alzee Williams finished with 10 points and Roger Franklin
grabbed 10 rebounds before fouling out.
The Mean Green shot very well to open the contest, connecting on 50 percent of
their field goal tries, including 4-of-8 from beyond the 3-point arc, as they
took a 36-28 lead into intermission. Arkansas State made just 37 percent of
their shots from the field, but did hit on 4-of-11 from 3-point distance.
The Mean Green shot just 26.1 percent from the field and the Red Wolves were
little better at 31 percent in the second half.
With North Texas up 57-53, ASU missed five straight 3-pointers, but snagged
the offensive rebound every time until Rakeem Dickerson connected on the sixth
try with 13.2 seconds left to make it 58-56. After Alzee Williams made one
of two free throws with 12 seconds to play, Golden converted his game-tying 3-
pointer with four seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into
overtime knotted at 59-59.
In the extra session, ASU pulled away from the Mean Green with a 10-1 run,
capped by a 3-pointer by Trey Finn with 1:16 to play.
The Red Wolves had a slight edge in rebounding, 44-42. Both teams left points
at the free-throw line, with the Mean Green shooting just 13-of-23 and the Red
Wolves converting 23-of-35.
