Greensboro, NC (Sports Network) - Trevis Simpson erupted for a career-high 41
points as he guided the UNC Greensboro Spartans to a 77-69 win over the
Chattanooga Mocs in Southern Conference action at Greensboro Coliseum.
Simpson, who just scored what was a season-high 30 points three nights ago
against Samford, converted 7-of-13 shots behind the 3-point line and 14-of-25
from the floor overall for the Spartans (6-13, 4-4 SoCon) as they won for the
third time in the last four outings.
Also scoring in double figures for the Spartans was Nicholas Paulos with 11
points on 3-of-7 shooting beyond the arc.
The Mocs (8-13, 3-5), losers of three straight and four of the last five, were
led by Z. Mason who recorded a double-double with 18 points and a game-high 11
boards, while Ronrico White and Gee McGhee contributed 15 and 12 points,
respectively.
UNCG shot just 41.2 percent from the floor in the first half, compared to
Chattanooga at 45.8 percent, but while the Mocs were converting only 3-of-9 on
the perimeter the hosts were connecting on 10-of-20 in order to take a 41-31
lead into the break.
In the second half the Spartans cooled considerably on the outside (1-of-9),
but an 11-of-12 performance at the free-throw line saved the day.
UNCG, which had won only three times through the first 15 games of the
campaign, registered 16 offensive rebounds on the day, compared to just eight
for the visitors.
