Clarksville, TN (Sports Network) - Sherman Blanford registered a double-double
of 19 points and 10 rebounds to help the Eastern Illinois Panthers pick up a
77-67 victory over the Austin Peay Governors in an Ohio Valley Conference
matchup at the Dunn Center.
Blanford also dealt out six assists and swiped four steals for EIU (4-16, 1-6
OVC) as it picked up its first conference win of the season. Josh Piper netted
a team-best 20 points and Taylor Jones chimed in with 14 points on 3-of-6
shooting from the field.
Will Triggs and Travis Betran scored 14 points apiece for Austin Peay (5-15,
1-5) as it suffered its third consecutive setback.
The Panthers took a 37-25 lead into the intermission after they knocked down
54.2 percent of their field goal attempts including 4-of-8 from beyond the
arc. Austin Peay trailed after it hit on just 38.9 percent of its shots from
the floor before the break.
The Governors heated up to a red-hot 58.3 percent shooting from the field
after the intermission, but EIU converted 16-of-18 at the charity stripe to
protect its lead. The Panthers were in front for the entirety of the second
half.
Austin Peay was unable to overcome its 15 turnovers or its 33-21 loss in the
rebounding battle.
