Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Ray McCallum and Jason Calliste both tallied 13
points as the Detroit Titans registered a 74-59 win over the Milwaukee
Panthers in the Horizon League opener at Calihan Hall.
Both McCallum and Calliste shot only 3-of-9 from the floor for the Titans
(9-5, 1-0 HL), but the former also cleared seven rebounds and handed out six
assists for the hosts as they won their third straight outing. Also scoring in
double figures for Detroit were Doug Anderson and Evan Bruinsma with 12 points
apiece, followed by Nick Minnerath with 10 and six boards.
The Panthers (4-11, 0-1) were paced by Paris Gulley who erupted for 22 points
on 6-of-11 shooting behind the 3-point line, followed by James Haarsma with 11
points as the team bowed for the fifth time in six outings.
Milwaukee led by as many as six points midway through the first half, but
after 20 minutes of action the visitors held just a one-point edge at 31-30.
Detroit managed to stay close even though the squad didn't make a single trip
to the free-throw line.
In the second half that all changed for the Titans as they not only converted
14-of-15 at the charity stripe, they also connected on 50.0 percent from the
floor overall in order to run away with the 15-point victory.
In a game that featured five ties and 10 lead changes, the Panthers hurt
themselves with 16 turnovers and just 4-of-6 shooting at the free-throw line.
