Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Terence Jones poured in 19 points and dished
out seven assists to guide the UAB Blazers to a 65-61 decision over the
Georgia Southern Eagles in a non-conference tilt at Bartow Arena.
Rod Rucker added 16 points and six rebounds for UAB (8-6), which extended its
home winning streak to 11 games. Fahro Alihodzic got into the mix as well by
scoring 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor.
C.J. Reed paced the Eagles (6-8) with a game-high 22 points, but he also
committed eight of the team's 23 turnovers. Tre Bussey chipped in 17 points,
however he also turned the ball over five times. Eric Ferguson registered a
double-double in the loss with 12 points and the same number of rebounds.
Georgia Southern has now been defeated in two of its last three appearances.
The Blazers took a narrow 25-22 advantage into the intermission after they
knocked down 37 percent of their field goals and missed all six of their
attempts from beyond the arc in the opening 20 minutes. Georgia Southern was
unable to take advantage of the hosts' slow start as it managed to convert
only 34.6 percent of its attempts from the field in the first half.
The Eagles improved after the break to connect on 53.6 percent of their field
goal attempts, but UAB drained 11-of-14 at the free throw line to come out on
top. The Blazers led for the entire duration of the second half.
Despite the loss, Georgia Southern held a 36-30 edge in the rebounding battle.
UAB outscored the visitors, 20-6, in points off of turnovers, and, 14-4, in
fast break points.
