Huntington, WV (Sports Network) - D.D. Scarver scored 17 points to lead the
Marshall Thundering Herd to a 70-67 victory over the Morehead State Eagles in
a non-league clash at the Cam Henderson Center.
For the Thundering Herd (4-3), Nigel Spikes and DeAndre Kane each finished
with 13 points and a combined 17 rebounds, while Dennis Tinnon posted a
double-double with 12 points and 16 boards. Kane, who shot just 5-of-20 from
the floor, missed all five of his three-point tries and was 3-of-9 at the
charity stripe, also handed out seven assists.
Jarrett Stokes led the Eagles (4-3) with 14 points before fouling out, while
Milton Chavis chipped in with 11 points.
Morehead State shot just 31.3 percent from the floor and only 2-of-8 from
three-point range in the first half. Marshall made only 26.5 percent of its
field goals and missed all 11 of its three-point tries, but a 6-1 advantage at
the free-throw line allowed the Herd to take a slim 24-23 lead into the break.
In the second half, the teams improved their shooting, with the Eagles
connecting on 41 percent from the field and 5-of-8 of their three-point
attempts. The Thundering Herd converted 42.3 percent and outscored the Eagles
22-7 at the free-throw line.
Though Marshall led throughout most of the second half, a late three by
Morehead State cut the lead to just three, while a game-tying three-point try
at the buzzer missed the mark.
The Thundering Herd outrebounded the Eagles, 53-46, and outscored them on the
free-throw line 28-8.
