Albuquerque, NM (Sports Network) - Alex Kirk recorded a double-double with 14
points and 11 rebounds as he guided the New Mexico Lobos to a 69-54 win over
the Portland Pilots in non-conference play in The Pit.
Also scoring in double figures for the Lobos (6-0) were Jamal Fenton and Hugh
Greenwood with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Pilots (2-3) were paced by Kevin Bailey and Korey Thieleke who both
tallied 11 points, the latter adding six rebounds, four steals, four blocked
shots and three assists. Before fouling out, Ryan Nicholas accounted for eight
points and a team-best nine rebounds.
UNM opened the meeting on a 6-1 run, but the Pilots kept the game close for
the most part and trailed by only three points at the break, 30-27. New Mexico
held on to the advantage after 20 minutes even though the squad shot only 8-
of-33 from the floor and 1-of-12 behind the three-point line.
Portland, which missed all eight attempts from beyond the arc in the first
half, came out flat following intermission as the Lobos put together a 10-0
run to put some distance between themselves and the visitors, en route to the
double-digit victory.
In addition to turning the ball over 16 times, Portland was also at a
disadvantage at the free-throw line where it was outscored by a 29-17 margin.
UNM survived despite making just two of 19 attempts behind the three-point
line.
