South Padre Island, TX (Sports Network) - Kyan Anderson scored a career-high
35 points to lead the TCU Horned Frogs to a 76-73 decision over the UAB
Blazers in the third-place game of the 2012 South Padre Invitational.
Anderson made 13-of-20 attempts from the field and 8-of-10 at the free throw
line while playing all 40 minutes for TCU (5-2), which scored just 31 points
in its semifinal round loss to Northwestern on Friday. Garlon Green added 14
points while Devonta Abron and Adrick McKinney pulled down six rebounds each.
Rod Rucker led the five UAB (3-3) players that scored in double-figures with
13 points and also dished out six assists. Jordan Swing contributed 12 points
and seven rebounds while Terence Jones and Robert Williams tallied 11 points
each. The loss was the second in a row for the Blazers.
After their poor shooting performance on Friday, the Horned Frogs came out of
the gate hot and connected on 59.3 percent of their field goal attempts in the
first half to take a 37-32 lead into the intermission. The Blazers stayed
close by shooting 47.8 percent from the floor including 4-of-8 from three-
point range.
The Blazers rallied back in the second half and tied it up before Fahro
Alihodzic put them ahead, 47-46, with 11:56 remaining before the final buzzer.
Anderson knocked down a jumper to put TCU back in front and it never
surrendered its lead. UAB had the ball trailing by three points with one
second left, but Jekore Tyler's three-point attempt was off. The Blazers were
unable to take control after the break despite outscoring their opponent,
22-10, in the paint over the final 20 minutes.
TCU held a narrow 31-28 advantage in the rebounding battle.
