Anchorage, AK (Sports Network) - Corey Stern scored 17 points to lead the
Texas State Bobcats to an 81-69 decision over the UC Riverside Highlanders in
the consolation round of the Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena.
Matt Staff added 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting for Texas State (3-3), while
Reid Koenen netted 12 points. Vonn Jones contributed 10 points and a game-high
seven assists to help the Bobcats end their three-game losing slide.
Chris Harriel paced UC Riverside (1-6) with 16 points, but he went just 6-
of-17 from the field. Dayton Boddie came off the bench to make 7-of-7 at the
charity stripe on his way to 12 points and Davin Guinn netted 10 points. Lucas
Devenny pulled down a game-high seven rebounds as the Highlanders lost their
third in a row.
This one was never in doubt as the Bobcats jumped out to a 20-2 lead just over
five minutes after tip-off. Although the Highlanders shot 43.3 percent from
the floor in the opening period, they went into the intermission trailing
47-35 after Texas State made 60 percent of its first half field goal attempts,
including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc.
UC Riverside cut the deficit to five points less than two minutes into the
second half, but the Bobcats scored the next five points to push their
advantage back up to a comfortable double-digit margin. Although Texas State
shot just 37.5 percent from the field in the second half, it managed to stay
in control by converting 14-of-19 attempts at the charity stripe.
Despite the loss, the Highlanders held a dominant 41-26 advantage in the
rebounding battle.
