San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Chris Anderson scored 13 points and dished out
six assists to lead the San Diego Toreros to a 65-61 victory over the Northern
Kentucky Norse in part of the 2012 NUCDF Basketball Challenge at the Jenny
Craig Pavilion.
Dennis Kramer registered team-highs of 15 points and six rebounds for San Diego
(2-0) and Johnny Dee added 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor. The
Toreros made 25-of-35 at the charity stripe to improve to 2-0.
Eshaunte Jones paced the Norse (0-1) with 12 points and six boards in the
school's first appearance as a Division I program. Todd Johnson scored 11
points off the bench while Ernest Watson and Chad Jackson chipped in nine
points each.
San Diego managed to make 55.6 percent of its field goals in the opening
period, but the Norse went into the intermission trailing by only four points
after scoring nine points off of turnovers. NKU held a 26-21 lead with just
under five minutes left in the opening stanza, but the Toreros ended the half
on a 9-0 run take a 30-26 lead into the break.
The Norse refused to quit and Johnson put them up by eight points by completing
a four-point play at the 9:46 mark of the second half. USD rallied back and Dee
put it in front by making a jumper with 3:26 left in regulation. Watson
responded with a jumper of his own, but Anderson put the Toreros back in front
for good by finishing a layup in the paint with just under two minutes before
the final buzzer.
San Diego held a 31-21 rebounding edge and attempted 22 more free throws to
fend off NKU.
