Charleston, SC (Sports Network) - Mike Goselle delivered a huge double-double
with 21 points and a game-high 15 rebounds as The Citadel topped the VMI
Keydets, 84-76, as part of the All-Military Classic at McAlister Field House.
Also scoring in double figures for the Bulldogs (1-0), a team which won a
total of just six games all of last season, were Marshall Harris III and Matt
Van Scyoc with 19 and 18 points, respectively. Harris also handed out a game-
high nine assists.
The Keydets (0-1) were paced by Brian Brown who tallied a game-high 22 points
on 7-of-14 shooting behind the three-point line. D.J. Covington came up a
rebound shy of a double-double as he tallied 15 points, followed by Stan Okoye
with 14 and Rodney Glasgow 11 points in the setback.
Both teams shot less than 39 percent from the field in the first half, yet
even with The Citadel converting a mere 2-of-11 beyond the arc in the period,
it still managed to tie the score at the break, 34-34.
In the second half the Bulldogs erupted for 60.7 percent accuracy from the
floor and 5-of-8 on the perimeter, not to mention 11-of-13 at the free-throw
line en route to the triumph.
Despite turning the ball over 19 times, the Bulldogs balanced that with a 23-8
scoring edge at the charity stripe.
These same two teams opened up last season against each other in this event,
with VMI holding on for a 103-100 win.
With the victory today, the Bulldogs will now face off against Air Force in
the championship round on Sunday, with the losers of the two meetings
competing for a third-place finish.
