Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Marquette coach Buzz Williams accepted a 1-
game suspension as part of the school's self-imposed sanctions related to a
violations report submitted to the NCAA.
Williams will miss the first Big East game for the Golden Eagles.
The school also announced the dismissal of assistant coach Scott Monarch. He
was found to have been "untruthful with department administrators on multiple
occasions after it was discovered he knowingly committed violations involving
a prospective student-athlete," according to Marquette's press release.
Monarch provided team-issued apparel and transportation to a prospective
student-athlete. Monarch then gave misleading information when asked about the
matter, but eventually admitted to his mistake. He was on suspension since
June.
"When I was allowed to review the report earlier this week, I was deeply
saddened to learn of an error in judgment of one of my assistants and closest
friends," Williams said. "I take personal responsibility for what happens in
this program and realize we must be role models to both our team and the
entire university. Our commitment has always been and will always be to
operate this program at the highest level of integrity in the Marquette and
Jesuit tradition."
