Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - Demetrius Ward scored a game-high 20 points,
leading four starters in double figures, as the Western Michigan Broncos
defeated Ball State, 78-61, in Mid-American Conference play at University
Arena.
Nate Hutcheson and Flenard Whitfield both added 15 points for the Broncos
(12-16, 6-7 MAC) as they won for the second time in the last three outings.
Matt Stainbrook chipped in 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds as well.
The Cardinals (13-13, 4-9) were paced by Chris Bond with 14 points, while
reserves Jauwan Scaife and Jesse Berry logged 10 points apiece as the team
lost for the eighth time in the last nine outings.
WMU made good on an impressive 9-of-15 behind the three-point line in the
first half, but still the team had to settle for a 35-35 tie at the break.
In the second half the Broncos again shot the ball well from all over the
court, connecting on 65.0 percent from the floor, 4-of-6 beyond the arc and
13-of-19 at the free-throw line, en route to the 17-point home win.
The hosts made good on an incredible 13-of-21 behind the three-point line,
compared to just 6-of-17 for the visitors.
