Kingston, RI (Sports Network) - Orion Outerbridge scored 29 points, pulled
down 11 rebounds, and blocked three shots as the Rhode Island Rams downed the
Massachusetts Minutemen 81-78 in overtime in Atlantic 10 action at the Ryan
Center.
Nikola Malesevic added 19 points for the Rams (5-18, 2-6) who have now won
five straight after losing their first six conference games. Dominique McKoy
added 10 points, while Mike Powell dealt out five assists.
Raphiael Putney scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to pace the
Minutemen (16-6, 5-3) who had won their last two and four of their previous
five. Sean Carter added 16 points, Chaz Williams 12, and Jesse Morgan 11.
Rhode Island took a 36-32 lead into halftime after scoring the last five
points of the half. The Rams shot 38.9 percent from the floor.
Rhode Island led by seven early in the second half but UMass used a 14-2 run
to take a 51-46 lead with 11;33 remaining. The Rams led 66-63 with 2;16 left
in regulation but couldn't hold the lead and regulation finished with the
teams tied at 69 as Outerbridge's jumper forced the extra period.
The Rams scored the first four points of the overtime and closed it by going
eight-of-10 from the foul line.
Rhode Island enjoyed a 48-35 edge on the glass.
