Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Julian DeBose knocked down a jumper with 0.2
seconds left in regulation to give the Rice Owls a thrilling 77-75 win over
the Miners of Texas-El Paso in Conference USA play at Tudor Fieldhouse.
DeBose finished the night with just that one basket for the Owls (13-10, 4-4
C-USA) as they won their second straight outing. Leading the way on offense
over the course of the entire 40 minutes were Jarelle Reischel and Arsalan
Kazemi with 20 points apiece, followed by Omar Oraby off the bench with 11
points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
The Miners (10-12, 3-5) were paced by Gabriel McCulley who tallied 23 points
and 10 rebounds, while John Bohannon had a double-double of his own with 18
points and 12 boards, adding five blocked shots before fouling out. Julian
Washburn pitched in with 16 points and Michael Perez 14 as UTEP suffered a
third straight setback.
The game was close throughout the entire night, but thanks to an impressive
11-of-12 shooting effort at the free-throw line in the first half the Owls
were able to post a 41-40 edge at the break after both teams shot just over 45
percent from the field.
In the second half the Miners hurt themselves with just 1-of-4 shooting behind
the three-point line and in the end the visitors could not defend DeBose at
the most important point of the meeting.
During the matchup the teams experienced 10 ties and a staggering 26 lead
changes so even the slightest mistake on either side was magnified.
