Griffin with a very revealing quote on scrutiny. (USA TODAY SPORTS IMAGES)
RICHMOND, Va. (WUSA) -- Read this quote from Robert Griffin III's Monday press conference. It's kind of riveting.
"I mean I was doing a whole lot more at this time after my recovery at Baylor. So, um, obviously with this situation, and what we have to deal with here, in the DMV and in D.C., there's a lot of scrutiny. So coach has to also account for that."
"In college, you are trying to make it to this level, and in the pros, you are trying to make sure you stay here for a long time. You can say whatever you want about what he is doing. I can feel any kind of way about it, but at the end of the day, we all have to be on the same page and that is what I am trying to do, just do everything the coaches ask me, show them that my rhythm and timing is there, show them that I can play.
"And at the end of the day they have to come through for me and play me Week 1 if I do everything they ask me to do."
The three things I'm going to infer from this Griffin III quote:
1) Griffin was in total control of his recovery process at Baylor. There weren't as many limitations. The pressure at Baylor was considerably less.
2) The way Griffin's injury was handled against the Seahawks, and the backlash the organization received (he calls it "scrutiny") has dictated the terms of his recovery process. "So coach has to account for that." Shanahan knows if Griffin III is injured early on in the 2013 season, he will be blamed and lambasted. Shanny's reputation is sort of at stake.
3) "They have to come through for me and play me week 1 if I do everything they ask me to do." So scrutiny be damned. If there are no setbacks, Griffin HAS to play week one. There was clearly a sit down meeting with established benchmarks the quarterback must meet. There were agreements made. If for some reason RGIII does develop a setback with his knee, it'll be fascinating to how he communicates it with the media.
