WASHINGTON (WUSA) --There is a reason to be dancing this summer at the Verizon Center.
Not for Alex Ovechkin's third MVP award. Or for the Washington Wizards upcoming draft pick either.
It's The Washington Mystics, the other pro team at the phone booth, who has bolted out of the gates with a 4-1 record, their best start in franchise history.
Two newcomers are the reason for this unforeseen turnaround. Guard Ivory Latta has added points on offense and a vocal leadership presence. And new head coach and GM Mike Thibault exudes confidence. The 2 time WNBA coach of the year brings a winning pedigree to a franchise who totaled 11 wins in the past 2 seasons
The Mystics 4-1 start is the best in team history. Even though Latta knows the team is about receive more attention, she says it won't alter their style. Still, anything short of the playoffs will be considered a disappointment.
