ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- If you think basketball is only just a young man's game, then think again. The joints might not move as smoothly as they once did but there are guys out there with competitive juices that will not quit.

Senteny-nine-year-old Frank Mulberry, 72-year-old John Medford, 71-year-old Ken Lynch and the rest of the guys play pick-up basketball at the Bauer Recreational Center in Rockville twice a week. Many of them play on what is believed to be the only league in the country for seniors older than 70. The league was started by John.

The hoopsters have an eye on March Madness but have their own recent championship on their minds, too. Ray, a retired chemist, was the free throw specialist on the top team. Ken was also on the championship team. It's a far cry from his Secret Service days.

The guys who play at the center come from every walk of life and they have a variety of ailments. But none of their conditions slow down down the seniors.

"It's a great way to exercise. If I had to get up in the morning and go to a gym and work out, I would never get there. I'd drive a hundred miles to play 15 minutes of basketball," said Ray.

Ray has been playing since he was 5. Many of these active adults played in high school and college, but if you think they aren't competitive anymore, think again.

Frank, the self-professed basketball junkie, actually took a swing at a guy once. "He has not been back since then."

Despite the physicality, this is about guys in their golden years still going strong in the sport they love. They meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, if you're interested. There are pick-up games and leagues all around the D.C. area almost every day. Check with your local recreation center if you're interested in joining a team.
