BALTIMORE, Md. (WUSA 9) -- In 2011, North Point's girls' varsity basketball team made it to states, but lost to Gaithersburg in the semifinals. In 2012, the Eagles returned to the University of Maryland Baltimore County's RAC Arena, but lost in the semifinals to Wise.

Saturday afternoon, when head coach Michael Serpone walked into the postgame interview room at RAC Arena, he had a smile on his face. His team had finally won a state title -- the school's first -- with a 62-56 victory over Baltimore Polytechnic.

"[I told the girls] you are now the best women's basketball team in North Point history: undefeated, won the Christmas tournament, scored 100 points [and] won the states," said Serpone.

North Point had a significant lead the entire game, until the third quarter, when the Engineers rallied and closed the Eagles' lead to three points. With just over five minutes left in the game, the score was 47-44, North Point.

"As is our routine, we like to make things interesting," said Serpone.

Guards KanDeon Niravanh and Tasia Butler responded to the Engineers' run by sinking four foul shots. The success helped refocus the Eagles and a three-pointer from senior guard Chalise Greenwood carried North Point out of danger, putting her team ahead, 54-44.

Butler led the Eagles in scoring with 24 points.

"Today, I can't thank anybody more than my team," said Butler. "We made it to the top."
