FORT WASHINGTON, Md. (WUSA) -- Tuesday night at Friendly High School, it took the Gwynn Park Yellow Jackets two quarters to find their rhythm, but once they did -- there was no turning back. Gwynn Park toppled the Friendly Patriots, 59-43.
"We started off really slow offensively ... we were able to play our style of basketball, get more up tempo ... Once we got the lead, we were able to hold it," said Gwynn Park head coach Michael Strother.

From a two point lead at half time, Gwynn Park racked up 22 points to close out the third quarter, 43-26, over Friendly.
"We told them that if they wanted to be number one in the division they really needed to push up on the basketball, play solid defense," said Strother.
Gwynn Park junior Takayla Ellis scored 13 of her 17 points on the night in the third quarter, while senior Genesis Lucas led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 20 points overall.
Gwynn Park (10-2) now sits atop the Prince George's 3A/2A/1A, while Friendly (8-4) is in third. The Patriots will welcome Forestville on Friday, while the Yellow Jackets will face Surrattsville.
In terms of moving forward from Tuesday's victory, Lucas said the team is focused: "We take it one game at a time, one practice at a time."
