THE WINNER: Becca Bateman


School: St. John's College (Washington, D.C.)
Grade: Junior
Position: Setter
Height: 5-foot-7

Athletic achievement: She recorded 602 assists, 82 aces, 81 kills and 77 digs this past season while posting a kill percentage of .692 and leading the Cadets (20-9) to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference semifinals. A two-time first team All-Conference selection, Bateman became her school's career assists leader with 1,819.

Academic excellence: Bateman has maintained a 3.53 GPA.

Exemplary character: An active member of her church community, she has served as president of her school's chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions.


"Becca Bateman is both a strong leader and the clear leader on a relatively young St. John's squad," said Dave Geiser, head coach at the Academy of the Holy Cross (Kensington, Md.). "She was certainly the core of their offense and their best server. She is a very positive person who exhibits great sportsmanship to all players, coaches and referees."

THE FUTURE: Bateman will begin her senior year of high school next fall.
