GERMANTOWN, Md. (WUSA) -- Northwest High School has come a long way since Mike Neubeiser's first season as head coach. In 2010, when he took over the program, the Jaguars were coming off a 1-9 season.

Now, they're in the playoffs. But what's the reason for the turnaround?

"When I first started playing we were really undisciplined. We didn't really know how to win," said wide receiver Ryan Markush.

"There was an attitude at Northwest that came and took the program a little under, so I think the new coaches were brought in. They've finally been around for two years ... we got all that out and ... we're back to where the program should be," said quarterback Matty Callahan.

Besides technique and attitude, players credit their closeness with their 8-3 record.

It all starts with head coach Mike Neubeiser who says working on the little things leads to winning, like the Jaguars' 4A West region semifinal against Churchill.

"We were down, I think it was, 21-7 at halftime and then we came back to win ... the bus ride home was just great ... the feeling after winning is just fantastic," said wide receiver Josh Gills.

Northwest hopes to make more memories on the way to being state champs. The last time the Jaguars did that was 2004, but they were a 3A squad then. Now, they'd like to join their baseball counterparts who are Maryland State 4A champions.

The next part of their journey to a title begins Friday night, for the Jaguars' game against Quince Orchard.
