BALTIMORE (AP) - The Baltimore Orioles have purchased the contracts of outfielders Endy Chavez and L.J. Hoes from Triple-A Norfolk and designated veteran reliever Kevin Gregg for assignment.

Gregg went 3-2 with a 4.74 ERA in 40 appearances with the Orioles. Manager Buck Showalter said the team needed room on the 40-man roster and Gregg was not being used often enough to be effective.

Baltimore also designated infielder Ryan Adams for assignment Tuesday.

The Orioles added Chavez and Hoes because they're short on outfielders after Nick Markakis broke his left thumb Saturday. Markakis had pins placed in the thumb Tuesday and will miss at least a month.

Chavez hit .190 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 47 games with the Orioles earlier this season. Hoes has not played in the majors.
