WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Here's a refresher if you forgot how Quince Orchard lost on the last play of the state championship game. The Cougars are moving forward.
Biggest Question: It's at quarterback. Junior Mike Murtaugh played fullback last season, and will obviously be thrown into a completely unfamiliar role.
Mencarini has faith in his new signal-caller: "He has a 4.0 GPA, charisma and he's intelligent on the field. He will be able to lead us."
Record Last Season: 13-1
Strengths: The experience gained from last season's run to the state title. Fifteen starters are returning under coach Mencarini.
Best Player: Linebacker Marcus Newby. There probably isn't
a player in the area who likes contact more than the Nebraska
Cornhusker recruit. For a linebacker, he has more dynamic moves in the pass
rush than practically every defensive end in the area. Newby also has a knack for interceptions.
Breakthrough Player: Running back Tyrell Williams. Last
season, the tiny speedster Mark Green carried the load on offense all
the way to the state title. Williams -- at 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds --
has a distinct, powerful running style, which could be even more beneficial for the Cougars.
Why Fans Should Be Excited: Quince Orchard will be circled on every opposing team's schedule. The Cougars will be the hunted this year, and not the hunter.
