ASHBURN, Va. (WUSA) -- If there is going to be a breakout Redskins player on offense not named Leonard Hankerson, fullback Darrel Young is a prime candidate.
The 5-foot-11, 251 pounder was picked up by the Redskins as an undrafted free agent in 2009, and has since blossomed into a coaching staff favorite for his free-flowing work ethic.
Young primarily played linebacker in college at Villanova before making the transition to the offensive side of the football. Recently retired Redskin Mike Sellers mentored Young the past two seasons and gave the 25-year-old some lasting advice.
"Stay humble and hungry. Don't let a younger guy come in and take your position," Young said following Monday's walk through.
So why exactly is Young poised to break out? In 13 games during 2011, the fullback only totaled 15 catches for 146 yards and an even worse six carries for 33 yards.
But this season Young's skill set has become too much for offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to avoid. He has soft hands, the ability to shed tacklers and surprising speed burst up the sidelines to go along with his tenacious blocking. Plus, with a rookie quarterback at the helm, an NFL fullback's role as a safety blanket is generally increased. Young is expecting an expanded role with the football in his hands.
"It's a dream come true. I'm in a position where I want to be. I just
want to get better. I have a lot of expectations and goals for myself," said the fullback.
Redskins fans deserve to know a little more about one of their starting players. Without further ado, meet Darrel Young.
