WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) - On November 26, 2008, ten terrorists stormed the city of Mumbai, India, opening fire at a train station and two luxury hotels. Eight-thousand miles away, Kia Scherr was getting a call from a friend.
"She told me, Kia, turn on the news. The hotel is being bombed. Its being attacked by terrorists," remembered Scherr.
Staying at that hotel was Scherr's husband, 58-year-old Alan Scherr, and their 13-year-old daughter, Naomi. The two were there for a meditation retreat organized by Master Charles Cannon of the Synchronicity Foundation based in Virginia. He was in that hotel when the terrorists walked into the main restaurant and opened fire.
"The terrorists came right up and shot under the table. I mean they were intent on killing as many as they could," remembered Cannon. "So that's where Alan and Naomi were shot and died."
After 48-hours of watching and waiting, Scherr learned her entire family was dead.
"Its a shock of course," said Scherr. "I don't feel hatred in my heart for the people who did this. I feel compassion for them. They were so disconnected from themselves and the rest of humanity. "
One year later, on the anniversary of the attack, Scherr and Cannon are joining forces by launching an organization to honor the lives that were lost and to help fight terrorism around the world.
"The One Life Alliance is an organization that were founding to inspire and encourage the conversation to honor the oneness and sacredness of life," said Scherr.
"We simply want to inspire and encourage a conversation. The conversation about the oneness and sacredness of life. And if we can find commonality, if we can find unity, if we can find oneness, most of our conflicts and difficulties disappear," said Cannon.
This morning, Scherr and Cannon officially launched the website for The One Life Alliance. You can join the conversation at www.onelifealliance.org.
