WASHINGTON (AP) -- Work will begin soon on the first of four improvement projects on the National Mall funded by the federal economic stimulus package.
The National Park Service will be replacing trees and shrubs that have been lost to disease or decline. The project will also cover pruning and treatments for elm trees along the National Mall.
Overall, 273 trees and shrubs will be replaced. The $200,000 project has been awarded to Davey Tree Contractor. The park service maintains nearly 20,000 trees in the parks.
The National Mall and Memorial Parks are set to receive about $56 million for four projects, including repairs to the sinking Jefferson Memorial sea wall and the Lincoln Memorial grounds.
