ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA) -- Commuters in northern Virginia should be aware of a potential traffic snag in Arlington this Tuesday morning.

Dave Hundelt, spokesperson for Arlington County Water and Sewer, says a large water main break that occurred yesterday afternoon on Old Glebe Road at Dittmar Road will likely take another day or two to repair, causing traffic tie-ups in the area.

The 36-inch water main caused road damage and led to flooded basements in the area Monday afternoon. Hundelt says the Red Cross responded to the incident and some people were temporarliy sheltered at the nearby Walker Chapel. Arlington County Fire and Rescue also assited residents in the area by pumping water out of their flooded basements. Hundelt says everyone has been allowed back in their homes at this time.

According to Hundelt, traffic on North Glebe Road will be impacted by the ongoing repair work. Motorists should expect two lanes of southbound North Glebe Road to be open for the Tuesday morning rush hour while only one lane will be open northbound. Right now Old Glebe Road is shut down between N Dittmar Road and N Tazewell Street.

Hundelt says water service was restored in the area approximately an hour after the break, however, pressures are being closely monitored and there is a chance customers may be asked to conserve water while the repairs continue.

Right now crews are waiting on a piece of shoring, a replacement pipe, and other repair parts to arrive at the work site before they can safely continue repairs.
