HUNTINGTOWN, Md. (WUSA) -- Neighbors spent the day trying to save homes stricken by the wind whipped waters of the Chesapeake Bay
This year's storms have washed away about 60 ft of beach leaving vulnerable about half a dozen homes on Beach Drive.
"Everybody is trying to help these five or six homes," said resident, Anne Jones. "It's awesome, it's awesome"
Outside her window, volunteers stuffed sand bags, loaded them into a pickup truck, and carried them to the shoreline in an effort to keep the Bay's waters from intruding on the home.
About 16,000 sand bags have been used so far, but the heavy waves have washed about 1,000 sand bags away.
Residents on Monday night said they're optimistic their efforts will pay off; some of the home owners are the third generation in their families to live in these bayside homes.
