WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Nearly 20,000 people of all ages jammed the National Mall Saturday morning for the 22nd annual Fannie Mae Help the Homeless Walkathon.
The 5K circuit took people around the National Mall and the Ellipse. Those steps will add up to nearly 6 million dollars for close to 140 area charities that work with the homeless, according to organizers.
This year, because of the recession, shelters say a lot more people have applied for help. A lack of resources means many are being turned away. They say they are seeing a lot more families and working poor in need of assistance.
In DC, there are at least 1,000 homeless children and half of the area's homeless population is made up of veterans according to experts.
