ANNANDALE, Va. (WUSA) - A 71-year-old woman has been killed in a freak accident outside her home in Annandale.

Emma Cabrera taught high school Spanish at TC Williams' Minnie Howard Campus.

Lucy Caldwell, spokeswoman for the Fairfax County Police Department, says the fatal accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Charles Hawkins Way.

Police say it appears Cabrera was leaving for work. They believe she put her Honda Pilot in reverse, and then apparently decided to get out of the vehicle.

Officials say it's unclear why she got out, but they believe the car ran her over either as she exited the vehicle or possibly when she tried to get back in the SUV.

Caldwell say the accident caused trauma to the body and Cabrera died at the scene.

Neighbors reported the incident when they noticed the SUV had moved into the road.

Fairfax County's Crash Reconstruction Team are on the scene trying to determine exactly how the accident occurred and are examining the vehicle for any possible mechanical problems.
