Fairfax Libraries Brace For Big Cuts

FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA) -- If you've taken for granted that a librarian will always be at that information desk, ready and able to answer your question or find you a book, get ready for your wake up call.

"These are not happy days," says Sam Clay, Director of Fairfax County Public Library.

He says the budget proposal to fill a $4 million gap calls for a 19% reduction of staffing, or 107 jobs. On weekends, it's likely libraries will have no librarians. And maybe no one at the information counter to answer questions.

"The purpose of going to the library is to get information. If there's no librarian there, how will you be able to get what you need," says frequent patron Annette Wagner.

Clay says if this proposal goes through, expect long lines, especially on weekends when libraries are busiest.

He says library users will just have to do more for themselves. Hours will be cut back again also. During the last round of cuts, night hours were cut from four to three days per week. This proposal cuts that to two nights.... with mornings gone those days as well.

Many people use the library as a place to work online or look for jobs. It's not uncommon at the Fairfax City Library to see people with suitcases, perhaps because they're homeless.

Fairfax City branch manager Kathy Hoffman worries about them when hours and staffing are cut.

"I wonder where they'll go and who will help them. Many people who need our help don't have access to a computer," says Hoffman.

But Director Clay is keeping a positive outlook.

"We'll be meaner and leaner and stronger," says Clay. "We have to be."

He says even with reduced hours and staff, the libraries can still provide a vital service to residents.
