FT. WASHINGTON, Md. (WUSA) -- The actions of a storekeeper described by Prince George's County police as a "hero" for disarming, then shooting a robber to death will be routinely reviewed by prosecutors for possible criminal charges, according to sources with knowledge of the investigation.
"There doesn't look like there's a problem here, but everybody hasn't had a chance to review all the evidence, and they need to be sure," said one source.
The review is described as routine in such cases where "self defense" results in a death.
Authorities are withholding the public release of a security video that may have captured the confrontation until the investigation is complete.
Shop owner John Jang says he snatched the handgun away from an armed robber as the man lunged across his counter at the Food Zone convenience store on Livingston Road in Ft. Washington Tuesday night.
The slightly-built gunman came all the way through a narrow gap in a protective glass screen designed to protect clerks from robbery. Once the gunman got behind the counter, Jang shot the him to death with the gun he'd wrestled away.
An accomplice fled. The identity of the dead gunman has not been released by authorities.
