BETHESDA, Md. (WUSA) - A woman was struck and fatally injured by a county schoolbus in front of Bethesda Elementary school Wednesday afternoon.

Captain Paul Starks of Montgomery county police says the woman,  identified as Sheila Clark Humphries, 60, was taken to a nearby hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. The police collision reconstruction unit was requested to the scene to investigate the accident.

Montgomery county Schools spokesperson Dana Tofig tells 9 News Now that the bus had just dropped off students from the Eastern-Takoma Park Magnet program. Bethesda elementary school serves as a drop-off point for their bus route. There were five middle school students on board the bus at the time, none of whom were injured. Tofig says the bus was pulling out of the school and turning onto Arlington Road at the time, and struck the Ms. Humphries, who was crossing the street.

Elementary schools in the county were closed early on Wednesday for parent-teacher conferences. So classes at Bethesda Elementary were already dismissed at the time of the accident, Tofig said.

Tofig said the school system is fully cooperating with the
investigation. The bus driver, a man who began working for the
school system in 2001, will undergo drug and alcohol
testing as part of the protocol following accidents.
