FAIRFAX, Va. (WUSA) -- A day after President Barack Obama declared the H1N1 flu a national emergency, more than four thousand people in high risk categories were vaccinated at the Fairfax Government Center during an all day clinic on Saturday.

The lines were long, snaking around the government complex and then through the building's lobby and floors as almost 600 health care volunteers and staffers scrambled to keep thousands of adults and infants out of the rain. Average wait for most families, especially those who got there early, was between three to four hours.

The H1N1 clinic targeted pregnant women and children between the ages of 6 months and three years. 'That's the group that faces the greatest risk from the virus" said Rosalyn Foroobar, Deputy Director for Health Services for Fairfax County. First responders were also given priority for the vaccination.

Foroobar told 9NEWS NOW Fairfax County was slated to get 40 thousand doses of the H1N1 vaccine, in both shot and nasal forms, but instead had received just 12 thousand doses. She was not concerned "There will be vaccine for everyone who wants to get vaccinated," she added.

Fairfax County will announce next week how it plans to vaccinate older schoolchildren.
