
MOUNT AIRY, Md. (WUSA) -- Crews spent Tuesday morning cleaning up the mess left behind from a jackknifed tractor-trailer along Interstate 70 in Mount Airy, Md. The incident closed the eastbound lanes of the highway for the early part of the morning rush hour, snarling drivers heading from Frederick County towards Baltimore.
Police tell 9 NEWS NOW the incident happened around 4:00am, along eastbound I-70 near Bill Moxley Road. A tractor-trailer carrying steel beams drifted out of the eastbound lanes. The driver over-corrected and jackknifed across the road. Video from SKY 9 showed nearly all the beams fell out of the truck and scattered across three lanes.
Police said in the backup, another tractor-trailer struck the original debris and ruptured its fuel tank. HazMat crews were called to the scene to clean up the second mess.
Eastbound Interstate 70 was closed for several hours. Drivers were detoured beginning at Route 75 in New Market, Md., following Route 144 or Route 26. At 8:00am, one eastbound lane remained closed. Westbound drivers were not affected. The cleanup was expected to be completed before 10:00am.
