Chevy Chase Debates Buying Tasers With Speed Camera Money

CHEVY CHASE, Md. (AP) -- Chevy Chase Village wants to use one favorite tool of modern law enforcement to pay for another.

Village Police Chief Roy Gordon is looking to spend $30,000 in speed-camera revenue on 12 Tasers.

He says the stun guns are an important public safety tool that would give his officers a less deadly option than a firearm.

But Montgomery County Councilman Phil Andrews says the money raised by speed camera should be used for improvements related to traffic safety.

Most of the money under the village's plan would go to traffic-related projects. Officials plan to spend $1.2 million building a sidewalk on Brookville Road and $4.6 million on street lights.
