WARRENTON, Va. (WUSA) - A 17-year-old girl from Warrenton was badly beaten Wednesday afternoon, and police arrested an 18 year old male who they say was an on and off boyfriend of the victim. Police say the girl may have been ending the relationship with the boy and that apparently prompted him to attack her. Police have charged the boyfriend, identified as Jonathan Stephen Bascom, with malicious wounding.
It happened at about 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Police say the girl was beaten with a baseball bat, and she suffered multiple broken facial bones, a broken nose, a ruptured eardrum and a broken arm. Her throat was also cut. She was so seriously injured that she was initially unable to speak to investigators.
Police have not identified the victim in the case, who is a high school student who lives in Warrenton with her sister and parents. Her family is now by her side at the hospital.
After the attack, the victim managed to contact her sister who drove her to Fauquier hospital. Police say the girl was in and out of consciousness and barely able to make the phone call. She was later transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital where she is listed in serious but stable condition.
Police say the assault took place at the home of the suspect -- an address on Fishback Court in Warrenton. As police investigated, they developed Bascom as a suspect and he was taken into custody in Remington, Va. Police say Bascom denied having attacked the girl, saying she came to his home for help after it happened.
However, police say, they recovered one of the weapons allegedly used in the attack, and a police official familiar with the investigation told 9 News Now that the girl later told her sister that Bascom had been responsible.
Police say Bascom was out on bond for forgery and uttering and was charged with malicious wounding. He was arraigned in Fauquier county court Thursday morning and is now being held without bond in the Fauquier County Adult Detention Center.
