TANEYTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Police say two people are dead after their small airplane crashed in Carroll County.

State police spokesman Greg Shipley says a man and woman flying in a two-seater plane crashed into a cornfield near Tawneytown early Saturday. Shipley says the plane went down about a quarter-mile from the Keymar Airpark, a privately owned airport.

Officials are not identifying the victims until their families are notified. Shipley says the man flying the plane apparently was an experienced pilot who had flown from the same airport many times before.

The plane is described as a Golden Circle Air T-Bird II, with its engine and propeller located in the back.

It's unclear what caused the crash. State police say federal authorities will investigate the incident.
