UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA) -- Volunteers filling in for paid professionals were among those who responded to a fire that killed two men the night of July 4th in the Marlton section of Upper Marlboro.
The professional firefighters had been reassigned from two nearby firehouses due to budget woes in Prince George's County, according to fire officials.
The two stations where volunteers filled the gap were Station 840 in Brandywine and Station 825 in Clinton. In each case, volunteers covered for two professionals who are normally assigned.
The stations were backing up the first crew to respond. They were four paid professionals who were dispatched from Station 845 in Marlboro.
Monday, the very same station was unstaffed from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. because of budget reassignments.
Officials have not identified the two men who died in the fire in the 12300 block of Wheeling Drive in Upper Marlboro. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
