
WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- It's an event drawing national attention. At this year's Capital Pride Parade, participants could boast about a bill to recognize same-sex marriages in the District.
The DC Council has approved the measure. It will become law in July-- as long as Congress stays out of it.
Michael Crawford with DC For Marriage says it's a step toward their greater goal of legalizing same-sex marriages.
Many DC Councilmembers showed their support, including Mayor Adrian Fenty.
A collection of conservative clergy in the DC area is asking the City to put the issue of same sex marriage on the ballot for voters to decide later this year.
They point to a California Supreme Court decision that upheld a voter initiative-- banning same-sex marriage-- in that state.
They hope to stop the DC Council from approving a law allowing same sex marriages to be performed in the Nation's Capital.
