
FALLING WATERS, WV (WUSA) - West Virginia State Police investigators are trying to determine what caused a fiery crash on Interstate 81 early Friday morning.
Officials say both I - 81 and Route 11 will likely remain shut down for the rest of the morning after a tanker truck collided with a passenger vehicle at the Marlowe exit shortly before 2:00 a.m. near Falling Waters, West Virginia. Officials tell 9 NEWS NOW the driver of the passenger vehicle has not been found. The driver of the tanker truck is conscious and talking to investigators.
West Virginia State Police are advising motorists in the area to take alternate routes which include Interstate 70 to Route 340 through Charles Town or from Route 522 off Interstate 70 to State Route 9.
Officials say residents in the area of the accident were temporarily evacuated but have since been allowed to return to their homes.
Officials are uncertain exactly how long it will take to clear the scene and reopen the roadway.
