WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Metro is considering changes to its MetroAccess program.

Gwendolyn Brooks says she uses MetroAccess several times a month for doctors appointments and shopping trips.

"I use it every Sunday to go to church," she said.

Each time Gwendolyn gets on, it costs Metro $38. But passengers only pay $5 round trip. The rest ultimately falls on taxpayers shoulders.

MetroAccess will pick a person up at their home, and drop them off at the front door of their destination.

"And that's beyond the federal requirements, but it's very much appreciated," said Jim Graham.

Metro Board Chairman Graham says more people are using MetroAccess-and the board has to think about cutting costs now.

Christain Kent with Metro says another option is to simply meet ADA requirements. That would mean passengers would have to travel further to get to and from the MetroAccess van.

"It could be a savings as much as $2.8 million dollars each year," Kent said.

Of course, simple talk about changes is enough to worry some passengers.

"That would be extremely inconvenient. If that was the case, I might as well take Metro Bus," said Debbie Marlowe.

But again-it's just talk until the board takes action.

Metro will try to save money-but Board Chairman Jim Graham says he does not want to see costs passed along to passengers. He does not want fares to increase. The board will talk more about MetroAccess their meeting this Thursday.
